Remember those degree changes I mentioned at the end of last week’s blog post?

This was one of them.

When I was studying for my Bachelor of Interactive Media & Design at Bond University, I was exposed to a number of practices/study-areas that I became passionate about. One of them was 3D modelling.

In the process of trying to find a final subject to take this trimester, I discovered a number of 3D modelling subjects from the Griffith Film School (GFS). I also discovered that a large number of GFS subjects could be enrolled in by QCA students and vice versa.

On the night after my first class at Griffith this trimester, I decided that I wanted to pursue 3D modelling a bit further and enhance those skills. So last week I applied for permission to do so by submitting a Request for Program Variation form to the university.

The form itself basically requires students to say what change they want to make to their program, the reason for doing so, and how the change is in line with their program requirements.

Soon after that, I was informed that the request was approved.

Just recently on Monday, I had my first CGI: Character Modelling class. During the class we learned about the importance of having accurate reference material and how to effectively use that reference in our 3D modelling software, Autodesk Maya.

I know the basics of Maya and how to build and manipulate 3D models, but one thing I never learned in Bond University’s 3D Modelling class was how to model characters.

I knew many of the basic things that our instructor was teaching but some things I didn’t. When it comes to software, I find that there can be very basic tools and functions that I don’t know about. Discovering these while going over the basics can only build a stronger foundation for further learning. It was honestly very exciting to be using Maya again. I only hope that I don’t get too ahead of myself.
